Background of the Ahimsa Sanctuary Foundation
The Ahimsa Sanctuary Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable educational organization dedicated to promoting non-violence, healing and renewal within the human community and in humanity's relationship with Mother Earth. The Foundation is dedicated to Ghandi's principal of "ahimsa", the commitment to prevent unnecessary harm from coming to any person or living being. The Foundation's educational efforts are concentrated in two venues: 1) the operation of a non-profit retreat and conference center located outside Philomath entitled the Ahimsa Sanctuary, and 2) providing community-based educational projects within local area schools, community centers and other civic groups.
The Ahimsa Sanctuary Foundation is directed by Stewards Stephen and Marlene Liff-Anderson, who share nearly three decades of experience in health education and a lifetime commitment to non-violent principals. Mr. and Ms. Liff-Anderson operate the retreat center and serve as educators for the Foundation, offering their professional skills and resources to benefit the citizens of Benton County and beyond. Resumes are available upon request.
A Model Youth Non-Violence Education Project
The Ahimsa Sanctuary Foundation is seeking grant funding to develop a model youth non-violence education project within Benton County which will serve the communities of Corvallis, Philomath, Monroe and Alsea. The goals of the project will be to prevent the school violence tragedies which have occurred nationwide in recent years from visiting our local communities, as well as to develop the leadership potential of our youth in promoting non-violence beyond their school experience and into adulthood. Specific activities of the project's Prevention Educator will include providing classroom and afterschool presentations, the development of a peer leadership program, facilitating parent-child educational forums and other community events, and the development of a curriculum which could be shared with other educational institutions and communities.
The project will seek to serve every adolescent youth in Benton County, with the goal of visiting all the students in the middle and high schools of Corvallis, Philomath, Monroe and Alsea school districts. The project will also serve students in the Children's Farm Home, the Willamette Valley Community School, the Ashbrook Academy and other private schools. The project will sponsor evening forums for parents and youth to promote non-violence awareness within the home and community. Community venues may include the Boys and Girls Club, churches and other organizations.
